Did you know that Ontario is hosting the World Junior Open Water Championships? The week of August 15-19, the first ever World Junior Open Water Championships is being held in Welland where some of the best junior aged open water swimmers from across the globe will be coming to compete. Swim Ontario has joined to host our championship as part of the Niagara Open Water Festival. Check out their website for more information on the full event – it’s going to be an action packed week. Why does my swimmer now need to be 14 to compete in the 3km? They did it last year as an 11 year old. Swimming Canada has put into effect a new Open Water Age and Event Distance Limit as of March 9, 2012. - Swimmers MUST be 11 years old and over to participate in any sanctioned Open Water events in Canada
- Swimmers aged 11 years old are limited to Open Water events of not more than 1000m
- Swimmers aged 12 or 13 years old are limited to Open Water events of not more than 2500m
- Swimmers aged 14 years and old may participate in Open Water events that can range from 5000 or more
- The same age restrictions apply to Para Swimmers and will also be in keeping with the FINA suggested distance for this classification.
For a smoother running event, instead of running two separate races for those in the 11-13 age range we will offering the 1km to those 13 and under. Why is this the same weekend as Ontario Summer Games? Ontario Summer Games dates were set by Ontario Sport Alliance and the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport. The World Junior Open Water Championships dates were set by FINA. They just happen to conflict.
