The Region of Waterloo Swim Club (ROW) is pleased to announce the appointment of Nandi Kormendi to the position of Head Coach. Kormendi will also take over the reins of the Wilfrid Laurier University Varsity swim team. Kormendi has over 20 years of coaching experience most recently the last three years as the Assistant Head Coach for ROW.
“We look forward to seeing continued success at all levels of the Club. After the last 2 years of obstacles, the success of saving the pool shows the determination and passion from our membership. Saving the WLU Pool was great for the aquatic users, but our efforts will assist the community for many years to come.” said Tracy Bennett (ROW president) “We are excited about our new coaches as they have the expertise and history to continue the legacy of our 33 years of success!”
“I’m pleased with the opportunity to continue my work with ROW, developing our club’s athletes to be the best they can be. The last three years have seen tremendous improvement in the age group program, and I’m eager to see these athletes continue their progress to the National level and beyond. We have a great history at ROW to live up to” said Kormendi.
Kormendi has served as head coach at the Perth Stingrays where he developed Mike Brown to the National team in 2002 where Brown went onto represent Canada at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. In 2008 another of Kormendi’s protégé’s, Jillian Tyler, also represented Canada in Beijing.
The ROW Swim Club has also hired Paul Meronen to work along side Kormendi for the 2009-10 season in the Senior and Age group development area as well assisting with the WLU Varsity team. Meronen has over 30 years of experience most notable swimmer being 1984 Olympic Gold and Silver medalist Anne Ottenbrite.
“This is a somewhat of a homecoming for Paul (Meronen) as he was the first head coach for the Region of Waterloo Swim Club when it first started in 1976” said Dean Boles
Boles who was at the helm for ROW for the past 22 years has taken a position with Swim Ontario as the Provincial Mentor Coach. Boles will continue to assist the club as the Club starts up its 34th season in September as the only Swim Ontario recognized club in Kitchener- Waterloo. ROW will miss Dean as our Head Coach, but his involvement is an asset to ensure a smooth transition.
