Competition Coordinator Requirements

As part of the updated Competition Sanction Obligations Procedure, Swim Ontario has introduced minimum qualification requirements for Competition Coordinators. Effective for the 2026–2027 season, Competition Coordinators must meet the qualifications outlined in Section 2.4, including completion of the Swim Ontario Competition Coordinator Clinic. A pathway has also been established for qualified Level 3 Referees to serve as Competition Coordinators under defined conditions and with Swim Ontario approval.

The Competition Coordinator role has evolved considerably over the years, with new responsibilities, technologies, and sanctioning requirements being introduced. While many long-standing Competition Coordinators have gained extensive experience through practice, there has never been a standardized training program specific to the role.

The introduction of the Competition Coordinator Clinic and associated qualification requirements is intended to establish a consistent provincial standard, ensuring all Competition Coordinators, new and experienced alike, have a common understanding of current policies, procedures, and best practices.

This initiative supports consistency across the province and helps maintain the high standard of competitions expected by Swim Ontario.

To support implementation of these new requirements, Swim Ontario will offer the Competition Coordinator Clinic through a combination of in-person and virtual sessions. The initial educational series will take place in September and October 2026 (see details HERE), providing multiple opportunities for both current and prospective Competition Coordinators to complete the clinic early in the season. Beginning November 2026, the clinic will be offered monthly to ensure ongoing access for officials pursuing the Competition Coordinator role or those requiring the clinic to meet qualification requirements.
