Scenario

During a relay, the 4 swimmers swim out of order. However, the officials fail to check the swimmers’ names and a DQ is not reported. The swimmer who swam leg 1 swam a personal best, however that time is not recorded against the swimmer but to another teammate.

Question

Should all swimmers have the order corrected and times registered correctly?

Solution/Recommendation

As per Rule I.6.1.6.2:

  • If an error by an official follows a fault by a competitor, the fault by the competitor may be expunged. If an official’s call on deck leads to a review of an athlete’s potential infraction, and it is deemed that the athlete made no error, the athlete will be cleared of the inquiry. Additionally, if an error by a competitor follows a fault by an official, the fault of the competitor shall be expunged.

If the infraction of swimming out of order is not observed and called within the allowed time, this is an official’s error.

Subsequently, the results should be corrected to reflect the correct order of swimmers, so that the lead-off split time is given to the correct athlete.
