Scenario

Swimmer is swimming a 50m race. At the 25m turn, the swimmer touches the wall then climbs out of pool, jumps back in and complete the remaining 25m.

Question

Should this swimmer be disqualified?

Solution/Recommendation

As per Swimming Canada rule book published on 7th Mar 2024, we considered the following rules:

  • Rule II.10.2, A swimmer swimming over the course alone shall cover the whole distance to qualify. A swimmer who does not complete the whole distance in accordance with relevant World Aquatics rules shall be disqualified.
  • Rule II.10.4, The swimmer must remain and finish the race in the same lane in which he/she started.

According to Rule II.10.2, this is a disqualification. Climbing out of the pool means swimmer finished the race but swimmer did not cover the whole distance.

Wording on the DQ form, “Swimmer did not complete the whole distance before finishing the race”.
